Specifically, tRNA-IPT transfers the isopentenyl group onto the adenine base at the 37th position of the tRNA molecule. This adenine is found next to the anticodon which binds to codon encoding for uridine. The isopentenyl group is taken from isopentenyl pyrophosphate or isopentenyl diphosphate.
