Ribose and fucose are important substrates in the uptake of material by cells, and are involved in numerous cellular functions. RbsD/FucU proteins have been shown to be involved in the transport of these sugars, and may cause anomeric change in the sugars. 2ob5A hypothectical protein LOC282969 isoform 1 is a member of this superfamily. More specifically, through structural, evolutionary and functional bioinformatic analyses it has been found found that this protein participates in fucose transport (FucU family). It is suggested that the protein forms a decameric ring-shaped oligomer, in which major conserved regions and specific binding residues have been identified by comparison with RbsD transporter molecules.
